Going to library school. This is life. And it's happening. Right now.

And this is the only picture I have taken in Bloomington so far. Indiana! I went there this last weekend, had the best time. No joke. It was beautiful and wonderful and great. Now I am going to walk you through every minute detail of the weekend. Thrilling.

First off - I went there with my friend Kelly, who will also be starting there in January. We will both be studying Library Science. Rad.

We flew into Indianapolis on Friday pretty late, checked into our hotel, zonked out. The next morning we drove to Bloomington and went straight to the Farmer's Market. They were having a soup tasting event - loads of restaurants came and offered free samples of soups they serve. It was delicious. Then on to campus. We visited the Lilly Library, home to an impressive collection of rare books including a Bible printed on the Gutenberg Press. I touched vellum from a very old book (it would be even more neat if I could remember the date of the book...). Other campus events included buying all sorts of Indiana swag, drooling over our building and taking awkward pictures. Fantastic.

Then we went on a drive to check out a neighboring city. It is called Nashville. It's an artsy little town with cute little shops. Very nice. I bought a teapot. It is beautiful - a deep purple. After that we came back into town and met with future roommates, all very cool people, I am happy to say. The apartment is nice. We had a good visit with them, learned all sorts of vital things about Bloomington, like where the public library is and what sorts festivals we can look forward to (apple butter festival, maple syrup festival, etc.). Also information on our program. So great.

Sunday - mostly just church, checking out the ward. Delicious Indian food, soooooo good. Then an episode of the new BBC miniseries Sherlock Holmes. Kinda want to see more and more of that.

Monday - More campus! We got to see it with all of the students there. We went and talked to some people in the Library Science school, got some questions answered, introduced ourselves. Then, my favorite: I went to the Estonian department and spoke in Estonian for about 25 minutes with a native Estonian! (I can't think of any way to not make that last sentence redundant.) It was soooo rad. I was nervous, not going to lie I sweat a bit, I was a little damp when I left her office. Gross. But it was good, I loved it, it felt good. I will be involved as much as I can when school starts. Then we headed off to Indianapolis where we poked around for a little bit then took off for Utah, back to life.

This was so good, I had the best weekend I've had in a while. And it made Bloomington tangible. I can picture it and I can't wait to see it again. I'ma be a librarian.

Soofyan

Here is a little summary of my evening with Mr. Stevens

Highlights

I enjoyed the drive. There was pleasant conversation, I felt comfortable. Also Chipotle, the restaurant where we went to eat, was delicious, though I was quite chilly. But I should have relished the coolness because it was so warm in the concert...

anticipating the concert with my friend Brad. I look worried. I'm not.

Sufjan Stevens is amazing. I enjoyed the music, he pretty much only played brand new stuff, I felt like it was a stretch, but it didn't feel too uncomfortable. I especially liked the in between bits of music where he slowed it down and did some folksy stuff. But I also enjoyed a lot of the showiness of the other songs. Even his dissertation 20 minute long epic mini-series of a song had appealing bits and drew me in. He is also very articulate. I liked how he expressed himself. He has a very large vocabulary and he doesn't use the word 'like' as a filler. I am trying to curb my own use of that word. I liked how he explained his road to finding his new sound - exploring new sounds, making a lot of discord and spending some time with that - breaking down completely his old sound to start to rebuild his new sound. He hadn't put out an album in years and he spent a few years in the middle of this process and then through studying the art of that Royal fellow he found a way to connect it. In my mind that means that his study of that art was tactile, that he released himself into the art and examined it from every angle. I like that. It entices me to do more - be more curious and tactile myself.

Sufjan and his band from where I sat

In between songs he told us about a dream he had the night before where he and his bandmates were invited to a concert by Prince, but when they got there it turned out to be just a man dressed up as Prince doing bad karaoke to Prince's music. Anyone who has that detailed of a dream involving both Prince and karaoke is automatically someone I want to get to know. So good.

He wore wings and a flashing visor(?). And silver pants.

He played Chicago.

Lowlight

only one...I was very warm and didn't bring a hair tie with which to pull back my hair.
So there you go. I had the best time.

Grandpa Heusser

This past weekend I went with my family to Grand Junction, CO for my Grandfather's funeral. He passed away on Sunday 17. October in his sleep. The funeral was beautiful, the tributes to him were so good. It made me remember all that I had tucked away since his memory and self has been fading. It's been a while since I've had time with my adventurous, intelligent, life-loving grandfather, as Alzheimer's has caused some separation making it hard for me to connect. He was amazing. Seriously. Educator, singer, taxidermist (I kid you not), scholar, outdoorsman, bird-lover, family man, the list goes on...
The picture above is from Grand Junction's main street which has a variety of art fixtures along the sidewalks. This piece has always reminded me of my grandparents. When we would come to visit we would often go to main street and walk up and down checking out all of the little shops and pieces of art and this one always stuck out. My parents always emphasized bike-riding when we were younger, urging us to hop on our bikes to go to the movies, or pick up something from the store, or to go to our dance classes - always with a story of how they used to ride their bikes e v e r y w h e r e when they were younger. This was passed down from my lovely grandparents (especially my grandfather whose thought of an enjoyable excursion was riding bikes from Grand Junction to Salt Lake City-aaahhh!). I used to curse their names as I hopped onto my turquoise bike and pedaled off to various activities. But now I see that it was a valuable part of my childhood and has done a lot in shaping my thoughts and attitudes and goals in life. And they did that in more ways than just this one. I am glad for the heritage from which I come, I love my family and our ideals and standards. I am glad for the weighty value of education, nature, music, art, dance, etc. that is so prevalent in my family. My greatest asset is my family. Really.

For an eloquent tribute written by my sweet older sister go here. It's a fun change and I have little attachment to my hair - I don't really know what to do with it most of the time. I've spent a good amount of my life with really short hair. I've had some interesting dos. Now I am growing it out for the first time in several years. It's longer than I've had it in a long time, usually I start to grow it out and decide that it's just not going to work out and I end up chopping it off again. Right now it is just a little past my shoulders, whoa. My friend has some mad hair dying skills, so I've been having her dye my hair and put highlights in for the past year-ish. My hair doesn't hold dye all that well, so if I want to go dark, I have to GO DARK. So I got the kit with the picture of the darkest hair and we did it. And it came out black...hmm. We added some blond highlights, it could use a few more. So I am a blackhead. Super dark. Gah.

The worst bit - this is not the first time this has happened. I did this on the mission too. What? But that was a mistake of not reading the word BLACK on the box. I wish I could blame that on Estonian, but it just wouldn't be true.

it's on like donkey kong

So, I'm going to Indiana. School starts in January, I'll be moving there officially at the beginning of that month. But...I'll be going for a little weekend in November! My friend Kelly just got accepted to IU Bloomington's School of Library and Information Sciences, the very school to which I was accepted! So we have decided to take a weekend trip together to check things out there. I am excited!

Also, can you believe how cute my sister's kiddos are? My goodness. They came down a few weeks ago to visit me and we had a blast. We got some lunch and went to the park where naturally the activities turned to tag and tying my nephew's legs together. A very nice day.

Elu läheb edasi.

Danger-bad

So, it is probably not a good idea for me to post two times in one week - I might get burned out and leave off posting for another year. But here's what's different - I have been accepted at Indiana University Bloomington to study Library Science. I start in January, I cannnnnnnoooootttt wwwaaaaaiiiitttt. It's going to be great, the best. Closer to the Librarian I have dreamed of being my whole life.

Check out the beautiful atrium of the Harold B. Lee Library. That is Maris, my good friend from Estonia, and I on the stairs. She came to Utah with her husband Matthew and we did a little tour of the BY. I love this library, it's so beautiful, I have good memories here.

So, there it is. I will be posting more regularly, I'm trying to change.

Peace out.

Today has been good. I got up and went running, then I came home and chatted with my roommate for a while. It was nice. Then I leisurely got ready for work because I didn't have to be there until 10am. Work was good, I organized the health section some more. It is looking very nice and is almost done. Also friendly coworker was there, so that was nice, short but good conversation with him. Then I went and volunteered at the blood drive on campus. My first experience with that. My job was simple - I gave food and drink to the people who donated. Then I came home and made spaghetti for dinner group. It was delicious. We also had cut up celery, cucumber and apples on the side. Very nice. Then I talked on skype with my good friend from Japan - Tomoko. My first time talking with her since before the mission. That was fantastic. And now I am listening to music and organizing my magnet making stuff so that I can get back into making them. I am still not sure what I will do with them - if I will pursue a venue where I can sell them. We'll see. But finally tonight we were able to get it together and talk and it was very good. He is one of my favorite people, it was great to catch up a bit.

Also, tonight I went with my roommate Martusha to her friend Jessica's house. Jessica and I are just getting to know each other, and I am hoping to develop our friendship, she is a very neat person. We made homemade bread. It was fantastic. And delicious.

And, while on the subject of friends, I am enjoying working with one of my coworkers, he's a cool kid. It is good to talk with him, I enjoy our conversations. I am thankful for the forums in my life that are helping me develop friendships with some worthwhile people.

Life is good.

Bookstores and Plasma Centers

Here is an update - I got a job recently at a used bookstore. It is on Center Street. Pioneer Book. I really like it. It has tons, tons of books. It is amazing. And I am realizing just how narrow my book knowledge is. I am pretty good with American literature until the 1950s and British literature from the 1600s to about the 1920s, but after that my knowledge is here and there. I am learning a lot. It is giving me motivation to read a lot more and to expand my genre choices. In other words it is inspiring me to do one of my favorite things.

Also, we get to listen to music at work, and since I am a fan of the mixed CD, mixed tapes being a little old fashioned, I made a special mix on 2 CDs for work! I brought them in and we listened to them yesterday. Well, one of them anyway. The second CD was scratched, so it would not play about half of the CD. But I enjoyed everything that we were able to hear. I hope my coworkers and customers did too.

Another update - I have started selling plasma to supplement my used bookstore income. I have done it 2 times. I ride my bike there and back. The ride home I go at a more relaxed and easy going pace, since I leave the plasma center lightheaded, weird - a little out of body. But the plasma center workers give me red powerade every time as I am leaving to get my electrolites up. And they give me money. The hardest part, though, is when I get home because I live on the third floor of my apartment building and I have to carry my bike up those steps, which I should not really be doing that soon after donating. Today when I got to the top of the stairs I was dizzy and sweating and I stumbled to my room and laid on the floor until I got the strength to pick myself up off of the floor. New plan - leave the bike on the ground floor until I have enough strength and stamina to bring it up the 3 flights of stairs. Okay.

back.

Hey. I will be leaving soon to serve a mission for my church in the Baltic States. I will be learning Estonian in the training center. Here is a map of the area that my mission includes. It was so nice. We had been trying to get together for a while, but nothing ever seemed to work for all of us. And then finally one day it did. It was so fun, I had such a good time talking with them. It was so comfortable and the food was delicious. We got to talking about English literature because both Akira and I majored in it in college. It was terrific, books are definitely my favorite topic. I recommended a couple of books and then they recommended some Japanese authors for me. I will look for translations when I get back to America. Meme's husband Khan, Meme, Me, Akira
                                                                Khan, Me, Shino, Akira
Such a good time.

I said goodbye to my Tuesday classes yesterday. It was difficult. Sad to think of not seeing them anytime soon. Here are some pictures of me and my students -Good classes. I will miss them a lot.

So I have been slowly packing. It is a very difficult task, very dependent on timing. I have to plan out everything I am doing for the next few days to make sure I don't pack the things that I might need at some point. It will be nice when it's all done and my suitcases are on their way to Narita Airport. Too bad I'm the one that has to get it done.

Well, that is all for today. Two posts in two days? Whoa.

It's been a while

Well, time goes quickly. I haven't written in a long time. But changes in my living circumstance make it important for me to start up again. I have been living in Japan for the past year and I am now moving back to America. So I am going to become a regular blogger so that I can keep in touch and keep people updated on things going on in my life.

It has been an incredible year. I have enjoyed myself so much and I have learned so many things. I know this sounds a little sentimental, which is something that I don't usually feel comfortable expressing, but I am a bit short in my vocabulary right now, so sentiment it is. My last days in Japan are going to be hard, lots of sad days. But I am glad to have built a little life for myself here despite not speaking the language.

Here are some pictures that I took recently. I will write more in the next few days. I have much more to say, but I am off to work.

What is?

And now for some pictures of a few of my students. This was a very good day for us.

This is a short post. But I am not feeling all that well, so I don't feel like writing anything else right now. I think that writing about emotion for me sounds whiny - I'm not very good at it. I am too quick to turn to overused phrases rather than trying to figure out what exactly it is that I'm feeling. Am I disconnected from myself? How do you make yourself more observant not only of the things around you but of yourself? I need to spend some time learning how to do that and then figure out a vocabulary that sufficiently expresses the way that I am feeling in a way that is true and good. I change without knowing it or knowing why. Oh the continual process of shifts and adjustments of this life.

tokyo

Well, Tokyo is cool.
This picture is of Shibuya crossing. These are fortune papers. What you do is you rattle around this big metal cylinder and then pull out a stick with a number on it. I have a lot to look forward to this year.

This is the Japanese knock-off of the Eiffel Tower. It's a radio tower, or something. It has an observation deck that lets you see all of Tokyo. Very cool. We came here on Christmas Eve and it was busy. So we didn't go to the top on that day. But...

...we came back a few days later. This is a picture facing Northwest. Roppongi, Shinjuku are included. I wish I could point it out for you, but that is beyond me. I took pictures from every angle, so maybe one day I will organize it and will have a panoramic view of Tokyo. I would really enjoy that, I think. So maybe it will be coming soon.

Well, that's all for now. I hope the one person who reads this enjoys this post.

Christmas break

I am in Tokyo. I got here early because airports make me nervous - I always feel like there will be some sort of change and that I won't have scheduled the right amount of time for all of the things that I need to do, so I figure it is better for me to be here extremely early and ready to go than to come a bit later and miss my flight completely. These feelings are a bit extreme. I can't control them, though. Anyway, I have checked my bag, so it's just me and my laptop. I am pretty bored. I will soon begin to listen to David Sedaris. I have a headache. I am worried that I have something wrong with me because I have had headaches pretty frequently. Could be stress related. I just saw three airport business guys walk by and one of them had their arm around one of the others, just pleasant like. I like that. Very neat. I wonder if that's a Korean culture thing. I'll have to look into it. Anyway, it's soon back to Japan.

Monday November 27th

I am still in Korea. I did some more sightseeing here. Walking walking. I had some Dunkin' Donuts for breakfast. And then I went to Outback Steakhouse for lunch (and subsequently dinner because lunch filled me up so much I couldn't eat another thing all day). I have never eaten at these places in America, but I thought it highly appropriate to take advantage of all the American things available. Anyway, I have found that if there is even the slightest chance for humiliating myself, I find it and go for it, gung-ho like. I would write about it, but it's a little too recent for illumination. I can't think about it without whincing still, so it will have to wait. I explored all of the underground arcades that were near city hall and my hotel. I did a lot of browsing. I also went to Namdaemun market and walked around for a while. I bought these ridiculous cards at one of the shops. They have these pictures of this Korean heartthrob and there are places for me to write my name, telephone number, and email address. So that I can hand them out or something. Or they are luggage tags. Completely wonderful. I think I will split the deck with Katie, because I don't think I will ever use all 50 of them and she can appreciate their potential. In one of the underground arcades I found this little art print gallery. I bought two lithographs and a card with a traditional painting on it. Very neat. They were pretty cheap. Well, I'm going to go watch some Korean television so that I can dream about hot Korean men.

I am going to publish several posts right now. I wrote these on separate occasions, but I haven't had time to post them until now. So here they go.

Today is Sunday November 26. I am in Seoul, Korea. I got in at about 11:30am and after all of the airport stress etc., I arrived at the hotel at 1:30pm and relaxed for a while. I took a shower and realized I forgot shampoo and conditioner so I had to use the complimentary soap. Crappy. So I went and bought a little pack of travelers shampoo, conditioner, face wash, and body wash. Smells good. Then I went to this place called Deoksugung Palace. It was a large square of buildings that used to be the palace of the (king?) of Korea, or whatever they call their supreme leader. It was beautiful and I took a lot of pictures. Delightful. The reason I went there was because as I was on the bus from the airport we drove past this place and there were some things going on in front - men dressed in traditional Korean clothing doing some demonstration or something, formations and whatnot. I don't know if it was a national holiday or if that is a regular Sunday activity. Anyway, the amount of stuff I don't know about Korea could fill a book. So once I checked in and cleaned up I decided to check it out. And it was beautiful, like I said. I did a lot of walking. I was trying to find some of the places that the other teachers had told me about. I didn't do any shopping, I just bought some dinner and some ice cream. So Korean people are a lot more relaxed than Japanese people. And PDA is a lot more common. The most I have seen between Japanese couples in public is handholding. But here there is a lot more kissing, draping, etc. here. It's crazy. It makes me kind of wish for some sort of boy thing to happen with me. It's a lot easier to ignore those kinds of feelings in Japan where it seems like affection doesn't exist. But I'm having a really good time. I love being by myself, doing things alone. I am really happy about this traveling alone business after all. Though it would be nice to have someone readily available for picture taking so that I could sometimes be featured in my photos. Well, that's all for now.

today is the day

Today is Sunday for me. I think it will probably say it is early Sunday morning on my post, but it is actually Sunday evening.

Well, things are a little weird and sad for me right now. I just feel a little down. I don't really know how to explain it and I would rather not think about it, so I'll move on to something else.

I was invited by Justin and Sarah to go look at some delightful fall colors with a member from the branch. I am excited. I like doing things like this. I am very good at staring out of car windows. Being a passenger in a car is one of my most favorite things. Without the responsibility of navigating and keeping the car on the correct side of the road and keeping everyone in the car safe, my mind is free to meander. I can be quiet for hours in a car, just thinking and staring. It always feels very nice. So tomorrow should be good. I am getting more comfortable with Justin and Sarah which means that I feel more comfortable to just be quiet with them. I hope it doesn't weird them out or anything; I don't think it does. Anyway, I am glad to be included in this adventure and glad to have met such neat people.

I am going to South Korea on Sunday. I will be there until Tuesday. I have mixed feelings about it. It will be neat to see a big city, I've been in the countryside for a while and I miss the movement of a bigger city. But I'm kind of nervous to be going alone. And I'm nervous about coming back to Japan. But I don't really want to talk about the details of that either. I just can't wait for it to be over and I just hope that everything goes smoothly and that I can somewhat enjoy myself for a little while. I'm going to look into some Korea things so that I can make the most of the situation.

I've been crying a lot. Some frustration tears, but a lot of deep pit of the stomach sadness. Maybe this will leave soon and I will be left with only happy things and bright sunshine in my stomach instead.

Well I am back.

Today is Tuesday and I start teaching in about an hour.

But here is the real news - I got a GEO card. This has opened the door to a wonderland of movies and music that I can rent for a week at a time. It is the Japanese Blockbuster. Goodbye empty hole in my life. I can now fill it with all of the entertainment and mind numbing programming I want. That is good news. I rented 4 movies, but I can't tell you what they were because it's too embarrassing. But I enjoyed 2 of the 4.

Oh, but let me tell you about the experience of getting the card. I had to fill out a form that had directions in English and Japanese. But there were parts that had Japanese characters and no English explanation, so I had to just guess. And I think I may have done something, not necessarily wrong, but dumb. Because as I was waiting for the girl behind the counter to photocopy my passport and the form, she showed it to a coworker and they both started laughing. I was a bit put off, but oh well. At least I now have a membership. And I can rent to my heart's desire. Because it's only 94 yen per movie, which is like 78 cents. Nice.

Well, I better go.

this is my first blog.

Well.

I am going to blog now. I am intimidated at the thought of people reading this, but hopefully I will get lost amongst the millions of other blogs on the internet. But I thought this would be a fun way to document my time in Japan. Which is where I am.

I live on the island of Shikoku in Japan. I am teaching English at a school here and that is mostly what I do. I have had a bit of time off already and I have been able to see a couple of really neat things. I work with some very neat people, and I have fun hanging out with them. I don't have a roommate right now, and I am one of (I think) 3 Americans in my city, so I am a bit isolated. But some of the other teachers who live close by have invited me to do things with them, which is great. So, for the most part I am enjoying myself.

I think that that will be all for this post. But I will be back to supplement. But it is late and I am tired.
